Iota Alumni Association Reunion 2008

It’s that time again, folks. As always, the Kappa Delta Phi's Iota Chapter at Universirty of Southern Main, annual summer reunion will be held the first Saturday in August, this year on the 2nd.

The location will once again be the home of Scott “Cranbo” Cranston, in Standish, Maine. Scott has foolishly graciously offered to open his home for the second time in a row.

Festivities will begin at 11:00am and continue, if history is any indicator, until well into Sunday morning. As always, we will provide grill and condiments, so bring your favorite food and beverage, and prepare to party!

The Association will hold it’s annual meeting at 3:00pm.Elections for all Association officers will be held. All Brothers are welcome to attend and contribute their ideas and input, but you must be a member in good standing for the 2008-2009 year to vote or to be elected for an Association office.

There are a number of routes from Portland to Standish, but the easiest is probably Route 22, which runs out of Portland via outer Congress Street.Take exit 5B off of Interstate 295 and go west on Rt. 22.Cranbo’s place is 20 miles from Portland (Rt. 22 becomes Saco Rd. when you get to Standish). You can also take exit 48 off the Maine turnpike in Westbrook and take Rt. 25 west for about 15 miles to Saco Rd; turn left and go about a mile to Cranbo’s.

If you’re coming from the south or north and want to bypass Portland, check your DeLorme’s map; use Mapquest, MSN Maps, or something to plot a route. However, there is a maze of secondary roads out there and it’s easy to get lost, so we recommend traveling to Portland or Westbrook first and taking one of the routes above.

Brother Dave Campbell prepares for another triathlon

Dave Campbell - Kappa Delta Phi

Kappa Delta Phi Alumni Brother, Dave Campbell of Iota Chapter at University of Southern Maine is preparing for another triathlon to benifit others.

An email from Dave,

June 22, 2008

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Last year I participated in my first Triathlon with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training. Their mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. I ran the Hyannis Sprint Triathlon with TNT, raising over $3,000 for the Society. I was honored to have Jamie and Zanna Mangini join me at the finish line with their son, Jordan and daughter, Jenna. I trained because Jenna had been diagnosed with leukemia at just a few months old. Jenna battled for just over a year, but tragically left us this past December. Her short life touched many others. In her memory I will be training for another Triathlon. This time I will be raising the bar.

On September 14th I will be competing in the Nation’s Triathlon in Washington D.C. this event is a little longer than the Sprint I did last year. This is an Olympic distance Tri. I start with a .93 mile swim, then a 24.8 mile bike ride and finish with a 6.2 mile run. Just to make things interesting I dislocated my knee back in January. I was in a leg brace for seven weeks and have worked hard to get back into shape. This will still be a challenge, but I’ve learned the meaning of “No pain, no gain.” And I have met some really inspirational people. Some cancer survivors, some whose lives have been touched by cancer, and some who just want to make a difference.

This last year I’ve seen what you might think is a little thing can mean to someone. I’ve seen how cancer can turn a family upside down and I’d like your help in making things a little better. My goal this time around is to raise $3,500.00. Donations need to be received by July 15th. Every little bit helps. Thank you so much for your support. I know that it means a lot to a Brother and a Sister who have been through one of the worst things anyone can face.

Please make checks payable to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and send using the enclosed envelope to:

David Campbell
PO Box 409
Weymouth, MA 02188

Or you can visit my race webpage at:
http://pages.teamintraining.org/ma/nattri08/dcampbeh62

I will be updating as I continue training, so check back to see how I am doing.

MTSND,

Dave

Kappatalks' KT Meeting 08 in Portland Maine a complete success.

Brother Scott Moody (Xi chapter) and Sister Nicola Reis-Sedgwick (Kappa Chi Chapter)

Sisters clean up crew

Scott Moody (xi), Dave Jones (chi), Jill Bivona (Kappa Chi)

Kappa Alumni @ evening social

On March 28th 2008 Kappa Delta Phi Brothers and Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority Sisters met in Portland Maine to perform community service and for a social meeting.

Chapters represented

  • Gamma Alumni
  • Eta Alumni
  • Iota Alumni
  • Nu Alumni
  • Xi Alumni
  • Omicron Alumni
  • Chi Alumni
  • Alpha Alpha Actives
  • Alpha Gamma Alumni
  • Kappa Eta Alumni
  • Kappa Iota Alumni
  • Kappa Upsilon Alumni
  • Kappa Chi Alumni

We met at couple of locations and then trekked to Chi chapter alumnus, David Jones. Dave Jones was seriously injured a year ago during a skiing accident, but due to his perseverance he has made incredible strides in recovery. This is not surprising as that he has been described as Captain America by his Chi Chapter alumni.

Kappa Chi Alumnus Sister Jill Bivona arranged the community service for Brother Dave Jones. They knew each other during their active days when Dave was an active Brother of Chi chapter and Jill was an active Sister of Kappa Chi, located at Southern New Hampshire University.

The crew of Kappa Delta Phi Alumni Brothers, Kappa Delta Phi National Affiliated Sorority Alumnae Sisters and Active Brothers from our UMaine Colony helped Dave clean sweep his basement, handle some over growth in his yard, and clean swept the upstairs of his house.

While Brother Scott Moody (Xi chapter) and Sister Nicola Reis-Sedgwick (Kappa Chi Chapter) whipped up some serious grub for the hard working teams.

Brother Vinnie DeMambro (Eta Chapter) was the brother of the day, installing two sets of banisters and re-doing an exterior wall and other construction around the house, Brother DeMambro operates a construction company located in Bar Harbor, Maine.

The active brothers of Alpha Alpha colony (with a little help and supervision from alumni brothers from a couple of different chapters) were set to some serious lifting, carrying a lot of heavy weight from the basement to the pickup trucks making runs to the local dump.

Brother Scott Cranston (Nu Chapter) was the master of yard shrubbery and tackled some serious overgrowth. We are happy to report Scott still has all of his digits and did one heck of a job.

The alumna Sisters from Kappa Chi, Kappa Iota and Kappa Eta turned their critical eye to the overflowing wardrobe of Dave Jones and performed a “what not to wear” episode before our very eyes. Once the “what not to wear” episode was over they changed channels to “Flip this house” and they transformed the upstairs into an area any top notch bed and breakfast would be proud to own.

Yard work, Basement and Upstairs transformations and construction being completed we turned our attentions to the food and to wishing Alumni Sister Victoria DeMambro (Kappa Eta) a very happy birthday.

We then broke camp for the day and returned to our assorted hotel rooms to rest and get ready for the evening social.

Kappa Eta Sister Jennifer D’Appollonio secured our evening social at Foreplay Sports Bar in Portland Maine. The Owner of Foreplay Sports Bar is married to Kappa Iota Alumni Sister Chandra Palian. They were extremely gracious hosts to us closing off the upper level for our social.
